This beginning of January has been a whirlwind for many conscious beings. Fires, big changes, and chaos, oh my! I’ve encountered so many who have been “deeply and properly bewildered,” to quote Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés, who also reminds us: “Do not lose heart. We were made for these times.”
I was fortunate to host a moon circle at Ritualcravt on Sunday, where we spent the evening embodying the energy of Aquarius, a sign that is both creative and community-oriented. (I attached the info from the handout below!) We also worked with the rune Algiz, the symbol of the elk, which represents protection and invites us to embody our power. With the Chinese New Year ushering in the Year of the Wood Snake, this is a time to embrace our passions and shed old layers of ourselves.
Aquarius is quirky, idealistic, political, and eccentric. As an air sign, it rules thoughts and communication, but as the water bearer, it also encourages us to bring our heart and emotions to the table. Aquarius calls us to be 100% ourselves, loving who we are so we can love others without depleting our energy. It rules the calves, ankles, shins, and Achilles—in circle, we connected with these parts of our bodies. Perhaps take a moment to notice how this area feels for you today.
Reflecting on this, I thought about the story of Achilles, the near-invincible Greek hero of the Trojan War, whose only vulnerability was his heel. This seems like the perfect time to identify both your strengths and your weaknesses. Interestingly, a reversed Algiz also asks us to tend to our limitations, where we feel vulnerable or ungrounded. This is an invitation to harness your inner hero archetype!
Algiz helps banish fears and promotes independence, autonomy, and faith. It reminds us of our power and divine protection, encouraging us to trust our instincts and intuition. Like the horns of an elk, Algiz offers sanctuary and defense, creating a safe space for us to connect with our higher selves and inner power. It also facilitates divine communication. Whether through meditation, walking, or journaling, give yourself time to connect in the ways that work for you. When we know our strengths, we can carry them confidently and use them to define and protect our boundaries. Standing firmly in our boundaries empowers us.
Try embodying the shape of Algiz in your body and see if you can ground into your power. Notice your boundaries—how do they feel?
